How Much Profit Do You Think the Average Print Shop Makes?
This was a recent Quick Poll question. Interestingly, the print buyer respondents consistently believe it is much higher than it is in actuality. This says a lot about perceptions in our industry. See our PBO Research section below for access to the complete results.

The Deadline is Tomorrow for the Aveda Environmental Awards

There are some fantastic magazine publishing heroes in North America, and the Aveda Environmental Award helps to recognize the publications and publishers with the best environmental printing practices in the magazine industry. The award, co-created by Aveda and the Green America Better Paper Project in 2005, has recognized some past finalists and winners such as, Fast Company, Shape, Mother Jones, Audubon, Natural Health, Utne, and Boho. Any consumer or B-to-B magazine that uses environmentally responsible paper/production practices is eligible to apply. The three categories this year are:

·         Best Paper & Printing Practices

·         Best Distribution & Efficiency Practices

·         Best Overall Environmental Commitment

The deadline to apply is tomorrow, August 31, 2010. Go here for more information, criteria and applications. By the way, I am honored to be one of the judges in the 2010 Aveda Environmental Awards.

Have a lovely week!

Should you tell losing suppliers the approximate amount of the winning estimate?:

How much should you tell your supplier about the details of who won the bid on your job if they lose out? If your company or the contract permits, it is beneficial for the losing suppliers to know the cost (or an approximation) of the winning estimate and, sometimes, even who won the job. This gives your supplier an opportunity to understand the types of jobs they’re competing for and to learn which projects they are most qualified to do. It makes it easier for both parties to do business the next time.

You have decided to print on certified paper (FSC, SFI, etc.) to do your part to help the environment. Kudos! You have earned the right to use a logo that will demonstrate your dedication to saving the world’s precious resources. But you are worried...
